Acceptance of these terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and Donget (“Donget”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) governing your use of the Donget mobile app and our website at donget.com (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
Description of the Service
Donget is a free expense-splitting and shared-budget app that helps groups of friends, family, roommates, and travel companions record shared expenses, see who owes what, and figure out the simplest way to settle up. It runs on iOS and Android and syncs your group’s data across devices. We may add, change, or remove features over time to improve the Service.
Donget is a record-keeping tool — not a payment service
This is the most important thing to understand about Donget:
Donget is a tracking and record-keeping tool. It is not a bank, a payment processor, a money transmitter, an escrow service, or a money-transfer service. Donget does not move, hold, custody, or transfer any money.
Donget records who paid, who owes what, and helps you calculate the simplest way to balance things — but the actual payments happen between you and the other members, outside of Donget, using whatever method you choose (cash, bank transfer, a third-party payment app, and so on). When you mark a balance as “settled,” you are recording that a payment was made between members; Donget does not verify, facilitate, or guarantee that payment.
Accordingly, Donget is not responsible for payments members do or do not make to one another, for the accuracy of the amounts or splits you enter, or for any dispute between members about money. Balances shown in the app are a convenience based on the data your group enters — not a record of completed or verified financial transactions.
Accounts and eligibility
To use most features you need an account, which you can create with an email one-time code, Google, Apple, or (where offered) a phone number. You agree to:
- provide accurate information and keep it up to date;
- keep your sign-in method and device secure, and not share access with others;
- be responsible for the activity that happens under your account.
You must be at least 13 years old (or 16 in the European Economic Area where required, or the minimum age in your country) to use Donget. If you use the Service on behalf of a group or household, you confirm you are authorized to do so.
Acceptable use
You agree to use Donget lawfully and respectfully. In particular, you will not:
- use the Service for any illegal activity, fraud, money laundering, or to facilitate transactions prohibited by law;
- harass, abuse, threaten, defame, or impersonate other people, including members of your groups;
- upload content that is unlawful, infringing, hateful, or that you do not have the right to share;
- upload receipts or images that contain other people’s personal or payment data you are not entitled to share;
- attempt to break, overload, probe, reverse-engineer, scrape, or gain unauthorized access to the Service or its systems; or
- use the Service in any way that interferes with other users’ enjoyment of it.
We may remove content or suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
Your content
The groups, expenses, notes, receipt images, and other content you add (“User Content”) belong to you. We do not claim ownership of your User Content.
To run the Service, you grant Donget a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, process, transmit, and display your User Content — but only as needed to operate, provide, secure, and improve the Service for you and your group, including sending receipt images to our AI provider for scanning when you choose that feature. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for (a) content already shared with other group members and (b) backups retained for a limited time. You are responsible for the accuracy of the data you enter and for having the right to share anything you upload.
AI receipt scanning
Donget can scan a receipt photo using a third-party AI provider to pre-fill an expense. This feature is provided as a convenience, and its results are best-effort and may be inaccurate or incomplete. You are responsible for reviewing and correcting any scanned amounts, items, or other details before saving them. Donget makes no warranty about the accuracy of AI-extracted data and is not liable for errors arising from it.
Service availability and changes
We work to keep the Service available and reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features (or the Service as a whole) at any time, and we may impose limits on certain features. Because Donget is free, we provide it on an ongoing best-effort basis.
”As is” disclaimer
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, title, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that calculations, balances, AI scans, or synced data will always be free of mistakes. You use the Service at your own discretion and risk.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Donget and its team will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, goodwill, or money, arising from or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service — including, without limitation, any payments, settlements, or disputes between group members, any inaccuracy in amounts or AI-scanned data, or any unauthorized access to your account.
To the extent liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law. Because Donget is free to use, our aggregate liability to you for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed a nominal amount.
Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Donget and its team from any claims, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your User Content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or of any law or third-party right.
Termination
You may stop using Donget and delete your account at any time, from within the app (Profile → delete account) or at /delete-account; deletion follows the 30-day grace period described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if we reasonably need to in order to protect the Service or other users.
Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including User Content licenses already granted to your group, the payment-tool disclaimer, warranty disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification — will continue to apply.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of [insert governing jurisdiction], without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any disputes will be subject to the courts located in that jurisdiction — except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise. (This placeholder must be completed by qualified legal counsel before launch.)
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. If you continue using the Service after the changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms.
Severability and entire agreement
If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will stay in full force, and the unenforceable provision will be applied to the maximum extent permitted. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and Donget regarding the Service.
