Understand your balances

Updated

Balances are the heart of Donget. They answer the only questions that matter after a few shared costs: who owes what, and who’s owed. Here’s how to read them.

Where to find your balances

  1. Open a Group.
  2. Tap the Balances tab.

You’ll see each Member with a single, clear figure — either you owe them or they owe you. A Member who’s all square shows as settled.

How a balance is worked out

Every Expense records who paid and who shares it. Donget adds up all of that across the Group:

  • If you’ve paid more than your share of Expenses, the Group owes you.
  • If others have paid for things you shared, you owe them.

Each new Expense nudges the figures, and Balances update the instant anything changes — for everyone, in realtime.

Your overall position

Beyond a single Group, Donget shows your total picture across every Group in your home currency, so you can see at a glance whether you’re up or down overall — even when costs were paid in different currencies.

Tip: A balance isn’t a bill for one specific Expense — it’s the net of everything so far. So you might owe one friend even though they joined the Group after you paid for dinner. The number always reflects the whole story.

Multi-currency, made simple

Paid for a hotel in euros and taxis in pounds on the same trip? Donget converts and totals everything, so your Balances stay meaningful no matter how many currencies the Group used.

From balances to settled

When you’re ready to clear things up, smart Settle up reads these Balances and suggests the fewest Payments to make everyone even — so nobody sends five tiny transfers. There’s a separate guide that walks through settling up and recording a Payment.

Tracking Balances across as many Groups as you like is always free, with no limits and no ads.
