Splid vs Splitwise: no sign-up and no cap, or the bigger network?
Splid vs Splitwise: Splid is free, uncapped, ad-free and needs no account; Splitwise has the web app and the network, but caps free users at four expenses a day. Which fits your group.
Someone suggested Splid because “you don’t even need an account”. Someone else has used Splitwise for years and has every trip on it. Both apps split a bill; they are built on opposite ideas about what the hard part is.
Splid bets that the hard part is getting people in, so it removes the sign-up entirely. Splitwise bets that the hard part is keeping a group together over years, so everything hangs off an account — and then charges for the conveniences. Which bet fits depends on how long your group lives and how many expenses it logs.
What each app is built for
Splid is a free, no-account splitter. One person creates a group, shares it, and everyone joins without registering. There is no cap on expenses and no ads, it works offline, it converts between more than 150 currencies automatically, and you can download a summary as a PDF (Excel export is an in-app purchase). Extras such as more groups are sold as one-time in-app purchases, not a subscription. It is at its best for a trip that starts on Friday and is settled by the following week.
Splitwise is the app that made bill-splitting mainstream. Everyone needs an account, it has a mature web app, and there is a large network of people already on it. Its free plan is metered: up to four expenses a day, ads between screens, and a $4.99/month Pro tier holding receipt scanning, currency conversion, itemized splitting and expense search.
The daily cap on a real trip
Five friends, four days, one city break. Here is what the group actually logs:
| Day | Expenses logged | Allowed on Splitwise free (4/day) | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday — arrival | 6 | 4 | 2 |
| Saturday | 5 | 4 | 1 |
| Sunday | 5 | 4 | 1 |
| Monday — departure | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| Total | 19 | 15 | 4 |
On Splid all nineteen go in as they happen. On Splitwise free, four of them — about one in five — wait for another day, a Pro upgrade, or someone’s memory, and on a trip that is the step where balances go wrong. For a couple logging three bills a week the cap never bites; for a group on the move it bites on day one. The full picture is in Splitwise daily limit: how many expenses per day are free.
Getting the group in
This is Splid’s whole reason to exist. Nobody creates an account, nobody verifies an email, nobody is asked for a password; the friend-of-a-friend who will never install a second app for one weekend is in within a minute.
Splitwise asks everyone to sign up before they can see the group. That is friction on day one, but it buys something: each person’s groups are attached to them, on any phone. With Splid the group lives with the devices that joined it, and sync is code-based rather than tied to a signed-in person — fine for a weekend, weaker for a flatshare where someone replaces their phone halfway through the year. What “no sign-up” honestly means goes further into that trade-off.
Splitting power
Both apps divide an expense equally, by exact amounts, by percentage and by shares, which covers rent, groceries and a shared taxi. Neither reads a receipt on its free tier: Splid does not read receipts at all, and Splitwise does so only on Pro. Item-by-item splitting — assigning each line of a bill to whoever had it — is a Pro feature on Splitwise and does not exist on Splid.
Currencies
Splid converts between currencies free. On Splitwise, currency conversion is part of Pro. For a group that crosses a border, or friends who live in different countries, that decides it on its own. The method that keeps a multi-currency trip fair is in how to split bills across currencies.
Settling up
Both apps reduce the balances to a short list of payments, and neither moves money for you outside the US-only Splitwise Pay. You pay each other however you normally do and mark it done.

Which one to pick
A weekend or a one-off trip, nobody wants to sign up. Splid. It is the fastest way from “who’s in?” to logging.
A trip abroad with lots of small expenses. Splid over Splitwise free: no cap, free conversion.
A group already on Splitwise that logs a few expenses a week. Stay; moving people costs more than the cap does.
Someone who does the accounts on a laptop. Splitwise, for the web app.
A group that splits dinners by what each person ordered, or wants receipts read. Neither, unless you will pay for Splitwise Pro. Is Splitwise Pro worth it? does that maths.
Where Donget comes in
Donget sits between the two. Like Splid it is free, uncapped and ad-free; like Splitwise it keeps everyone in realtime and attaches groups to an account, after a guest mode that covers two groups. And it includes what both leave out at no cost: Scan receipt with AI turns a photo of the bill into a draft expense with its lines listed, Items and Costs assigns each line to whoever had it, and Settle up proposes the fewest transfers that clear Everyone’s balance. People join with an Invite link and pick their name.
Where it loses: there is no web app, its network is smaller than Splitwise’s, and it asks for a Google or Apple sign-in beyond guest mode, which Splid never does. The whole field is laid out in Splitwise alternatives: 5 free apps compared.
Frequently asked questions
Is Splid really free?
Yes, for splitting: no cap on expenses, no ads, and free multi-currency. Splid Plus, extra groups and Excel export are optional one-time in-app purchases. It has no receipt reading or item-by-item splitting.
Does Splid need an account?
No. One person creates the group and shares it, and the others join. The trade-off is weaker recovery after a lost phone.
What is the difference between Splid and Splitwise?
Splid is free, no-account, uncapped and ad-free. Splitwise requires an account, caps free users at four expenses a day with ads, and sells scanning, conversion and itemized splits in Pro at $4.99 a month — but has the web app and the network.
Which is better for a trip abroad?
Usually Splid: no daily cap and free currency conversion. On Splitwise free, conversion is Pro-only and the busiest days hit the cap.
Can Splid or Splitwise scan receipts?
Splid cannot. Splitwise can, on Pro. Donget includes AI receipt scanning free.
Which is better for a flatshare?
For a group you keep for years, accounts and realtime sync matter more, which favours Splitwise if its free limits suit you, or an account-based free app. Splid suits short-lived groups.
The bottom line
Splid removes the sign-up and the cap and stops at the basics; Splitwise keeps the network and the web app and keeps the free plan metered, with Pro as the upgrade. Pick Splid for a quick trip, Splitwise if your people are already there — and if you want no cap, no ads and the Pro features without paying, there is a third option.
Download Donget free and log the whole trip — every expense, every currency, with the receipts read for you.
