Is Splitwise Pro worth it? Price, what it adds, and who should pay

Splitwise Pro costs $4.99 a month. It removes the daily expense cap and ads and adds receipt scanning, currency conversion and itemized splits. Worth it for some groups, not others — here's how to tell.

You hit the daily limit, the app offered Pro, and the price is less than a coffee. It is a reasonable thing to pay for. The question is whether your group needs what it unlocks, or whether you are paying to remove an obstacle you would rarely meet.

Splitwise Pro is worth it if your group regularly logs more than four expenses on the same day, crosses currencies, or splits bills item by item — and wants to stay on Splitwise. If none of those apply, the free plan covers you. If they all apply and staying on Splitwise does not matter, a free app without the cap does the same job.

What Splitwise Pro costs

In the US, Splitwise Pro is $4.99 a month. Paid monthly for a year, that is 12 × $4.99 = $59.88. An annual plan exists as well, and prices vary by country and app store, so the upgrade screen is where to check the exact local figure.

What Pro adds

Splitwise’s own Pro page lists:

  • Unlimited expenses — no daily cap
  • A totally ad-free experience
  • Receipt scanning
  • Itemization — splitting a bill line by line
  • Currency conversion
  • Expense search
  • Charts and graphs
  • Default split settings
  • Transaction import (US only)
  • Early access to new features

The free plan keeps the core: groups, the four everyday split methods, balances and settle-up. What it takes away is volume (anything past four expenses a day), attention (ads), and the time-savers. Which of those limits you will actually meet is covered in is Splitwise free?.

Three groups, three answers

A flatshare of three. Rent, bills, a weekly shop, the odd takeaway — about twelve expenses a month. That is well under one a day on average, and even a busy Saturday rarely gets past four. The cap almost never bites. Pro would buy search, charts and scanning; nice to have, not needed. Verdict: stay free.

Six friends, ten days away. A trip like that logs around forty expenses, and they cluster: six or seven on the arrival and departure days. On the free plan the logger hits the cap on exactly the busiest days. If the trip also crosses a border, currency conversion is Pro-only. A single month of Pro costs $4.99; against forty expenses that is about 12 cents each. Verdict: worth it if the group is set on Splitwise. What happens on the free plan instead is in what to do when you hit Splitwise’s daily limit.

A couple who eat out and split by what they ordered. Few expenses, so the cap is not the issue; itemization is. On the free plan, splitting a dinner line by line means a calculator and several separate expenses. Verdict: worth it only if item-by-item splits happen often.

A two-minute test

Answer these for your busiest realistic month:

  1. Does any single day produce more than four shared expenses?
  2. Do you spend in more than one currency?
  3. Do you split restaurant or supermarket bills by who had what?
  4. Do you want receipts read instead of typed?
  5. Is the whole group determined to stay on Splitwise?

If you answered no to 1–4, the free plan is enough. If you answered yes to any of 1–4 and yes to 5, Pro is a fair price for what you get. If you answered yes to any of 1–4 and no to 5, you are paying to stay somewhere, and a free app without the cap is the cheaper answer.

Who pays is its own question

A subscription belongs to the person who buys it, and a splitting app is useful only when the whole group uses it. In practice, one person — usually the organiser — ends up paying for everyone’s convenience. That is fine when it is agreed. It is worth saying out loud before the trip, rather than discovering it on day two. If you would like it shared, it is a group expense like any other: $4.99 split six ways is about 83 cents each.

What Pro doesn’t change

Pro does not move money; paying each other still happens outside the ledger, or through Splitwise Pay, which is a separate US-only service with its own fees — see Splitwise Pay: fees, bank linking and whether it’s safe. And it doesn’t change who else is on Splitwise: its network and web app are the same on both plans, and they are the honest reasons many groups stay.

Where Donget comes in

Donget includes what most people want from Pro, without a Pro tier. There is no cap on expenses and no ads. Scan receipt with AI turns a photo of the bill into a draft expense with the items listed, and Items and Costs assigns each line to whoever had it. Each group has its own Currency, with expenses allowed in others, and Settle up proposes the fewest transfers that clear the group. Nobody in the group pays anything, so there is no conversation about who covers the subscription. How the scanning works in practice is in how AI receipt scanning saves you time.

Where it loses: there is no web app to match Splitwise’s, the network is smaller, and beyond a guest mode limited to two groups you sign in with Google or Apple. If you decide to move, how to switch from Splitwise keeps the balances intact on the way out, and Splitwise alternatives: 5 free apps compared covers the rest of the field.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Splitwise Pro cost?

$4.99 a month in the US, which is $59.88 over a year if you pay monthly. An annual plan also exists; prices vary by country and app store.

What do you get with Splitwise Pro?

Unlimited expenses, no ads, receipt scanning, itemization, currency conversion, expense search, charts, default split settings and early access to new features. Transaction import is US-only.

Does Splitwise Pro remove the daily expense limit?

Yes. The free plan allows up to four expenses a day; Pro includes unlimited expenses and removes the ads.

Is Splitwise Pro worth it for a trip?

For a busy group trip it can be: the cap bites on the busiest days and currency conversion is Pro-only. A free app with no cap and free currencies removes the question.

Is Splitwise Pro worth it for roommates?

Usually not for the cap alone — a flatshare rarely logs more than four expenses in a day. It can be worth it for scanning, search and charts on a long-lived group.

Is there a free app with the same features as Splitwise Pro?

Several free apps have no cap and no ads. Donget also includes AI receipt scanning, item-by-item splitting and multi-currency free. Splitwise keeps the web app and the larger network.

The bottom line

Splitwise Pro is an honest product at an honest price: $4.99 a month removes the cap and the ads and adds the time-savers. It is worth it when your group logs a lot, spends across currencies or splits by item — and is staying on Splitwise. If only the first half of that sentence is true, you don’t have to pay to get it.
